World Work in Joel’s Words – October 2018

The following excerpt is from the book Consciousness Transformed, in the August 16, 1963 message:  “One with God:  Praying for the World”

Everyone who has attained enough spiritual endowment to help relieve the world of its pains, sins, diseases, lacks, and limitations must inevitably turn to the larger subject of world work or praying for the world.  In this you must remember that you do not pray as others pray—that our enemies be defeated and that our allies achieve victories.  You do not pray for the republican party or the democratic party or the socialist party, because all such prayers bring you down to the level of attempting to improve the human scene by utilizing your own human judgement.

In order to pray aright, you must not pray for any earthly conditions.  Even though you should believe that you have a plan which would save the world, do not pray for it.  There never has been a man on earth so good that he would know how to make laws which would benefit everyone.  No one has been that intelligent.  Humanhood is based on the law of: “Self-preservation is the first law of human nature,” so nothing of a human nature will save the world.

Only one thing will save the world and nothing else: the activity of the Christ operating in human consciousness.  One thing and one thing alone can save your individual life and that is the activity of the Christ in your consciousness.  That and that alone can bring you to the life that God meant you to lead when he created you in the beginning in his image and likeness.  You have all witnessed good men who became bad, and intelligent men who lost their intelligence. You have all witnessed human good, but never have you witnessed human good working impersonally and impartially for the good of everyone.

Man cannot become that good humanly, but he can when he is spiritually endowed.  You cannot pray for peace on earth, because you are praying for an effect.  You can only pray that the kingdom of God be realized on earth as it is in heaven, and then that realization will bring peace.  If, through your experiences with a spiritual message, you have had some proof or conviction that, in the presence of the Christ, the carnal mind is not power, then you can go on to the greater realization that the carnal mind is the arm of flesh or nothingness. If you can witness the carnal mind as nothingness, you should have no trouble at all in engaging in world work and realizing that there is only one carnal mind, whether it is manifesting as one individual or as a billion individuals.

When you can perceive that the carnal mind is non-power in the realization of the presence of the Christ, you are helping nullify it for the world.  It is not enough to remember that the carnal mind is not power—it is not power only in the realization of the presence of the Christ.  “One with God is a majority.”  Understand that the carnal mind is power on its own level of action.  It loses its power only when it comes in contact with the Christ, with your consciousness.  There is no darkness in the presence of light.  “In thy presence is fullness of joy.”[1]  Wherever Jesus moved with his Christ activated consciousness, sin, disease, and death disappeared on his coming.  So it is in some measure with each one of you.  Wherever you move with some measure of spiritual endowment, some measure of sin and disease must walk out; it must dissolve.

Since we are agreeing that there is but one carnal mind, there is no reason why “ten righteous men” should not nullify the carnal mind of the whole world.  Everyone is not receptive, but fortunately we do not have to wait for everyone.  Be concerned only with this realization, that the activity of the Christ in your consciousness dispels the carnal mind.  When I approach spiritual work, it is not to change any set of human circumstances. My only interest is the realization of the activity of the Christ dissolving mortal sense.
