The following excerpt is from Recording #544, Side 1, from the 1964 Oahu / Maui Series, “Spiritual Attainment Through the Door”
I would like you to see a reason for a lack of healing. … It is very often because we are seeking healing instead of wholeness. To seek healing means a desire to get rid of this ill, this pain, this discord, this malformation, this inharmony. And of course, this is no way to go to God. The only right way of going to God is for the experience of wholeness, a completeness in God, and this means the willingness that we be washed clean of the human traits that each one of us longs to cling to. We all have some that we would gladly get rid of, but there are others that we will permit no man to take from us, and these are the very ones that are the barriers to healing. But in going to God for wholeness, the wholeness of the robe, the completeness of the Spirit, the actual baptism—this means a willingness to be thoroughly washed, inside and out.
And I can illustrate that in an experience that we’ve had with students participating in world work or world prayer work—some wonder why they are not bringing forth fruitage. World work is the most difficult of all because we must first of all surrender all concepts as to the solution we are seeking. We are never to be praying for a certain event or experience. The reason this is difficult is that each one of us has decided whether it would be good to have a Republican administration or a Democratic administration, and in some cases even a socialistic or communistic administration, and when we pray, we are praying for this. There can be no success in such world work. Success comes only with the surrender of material or human desires, and the desire for God’s government on earth—spiritual government, not just a different form of human government. And you can carry this out as you watch yourself in prayer for your own healings, or the healings of others, and see to what extent you would like a good human condition substituted for the present evil one, and then you will know why your prayers do not mesh. God is Spirit, and the only prayer of a righteous man is a prayer for spiritual realization, spiritual harmony, spiritual government, spiritual grace.
